Little is known for certain about the life and personality of Plautus, Mostellaria is one of several Plautus plays used as inspiration for the Stephen Sondheim, Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum". The character Erroneous returns from being abroad to be told his house is haunted and must walk seven times around the seven hills of Rome to remove the ghosts. T. MACCI PLAVTI MOSTELLARIA. PERSONAE.
The Mostellaria (ten called in English The Haunted House) is one of Plautus' most lively plays and one which contains his most skilfully handled elements of farce. Mostellaria comoedia est quam Plautus saeculo II ineunte scripsit. Prologo caret haec fabula : de statu rerum certiores fimus per altercationem inter bonum rusticumque servum, Grumionem, et nequam urbanumque servum, Tranionem . Abstract from the book: "Τίτου Μάκκιου Πλαύτου, Το 'στοιχειωμένο' σπίτι (T. Maccius Plautus, Mostellaria)", Ioannina 2014. Simo means it in the former, while Tranio chooses to take it in the latter sense. Simo does not like this attempt at wit, and tells him not to be impertinent. We may here observe, that Plautus was born at Sarsina, a town of Umbria.
